QUESTIONS ABOUT ULCERS & ACID REFLUX

What is a peptic ulcer?1

A peptic ulcer is an open sore in your stomach lining or duodenum (the top of your small intestine)

If you have an ulcer you may experience burning or gnawing stomach pain, indigestion, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting.

There are two main causes:1

H. pylori infection: Overgrowth of H. pylori bacteria in the stomach or duodenum can upset the natural balance of bacteria and cause inflammation which can over time wear out the gastrointestinal lining. This bacteria may also attack the lining.

Overuse of NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines): Over-the-counter pain relievers including aspirin and ibuprofen can prevent repair of damage to your gastrointestinal lining inside the stomach and duodenum.

Other lifestyle factors that can put you at risk for peptic ulcers are drinking too much alcohol, smoking cigarettes and stress.3

Acid reflux is when stomach acid rises into your oesophagus and irritates the lining. Acid reflux causes symptoms such as heartburn and indigestion.

Acid reflux happens when the valve (called the lower oesophageal sphincter or LES) at the bottom of your oesophagus relaxes or weakens and allows acid to pass through. Smoking and being overweight can weaken or relax the valve.

Whilst foods and drinks probably aren’t enough to cause acid reflux alone, they can contribute to it. Chocolate, coffee, alcohol, mint, garlic and onions may have a relaxing effect on your LES.

Fatty foods increase stomach acid and take longer to digest, so there’s more opportunity for acid to escape.
